It is Written!

Happy Friday Friends :) Wow what a day! Its a snow day here again for us in the North East. NYC closed their schools, and when that happens you know its BAD!  I am running out of things to do with my kids, Barklow wants to play in the snow all day, & Michael is home….again :) I love my husband don’t get me wrong, but why is it my kids are soooo different when he is home?!?! Its as if  they were switched! My tight run ship is now a sinking Titanic. So instead of fighting it (like I would normally do) now I embrace it, & find myself in “time-out” more often :)   I found an article I have to share with you all. I am chuckling already as I write :) It is finally written that research is showing that a curvy woman’s body is like a drug to men!! :)   The brain of a man watching a woman’s curvaceous body feels the same sensation and reward it would as if he were drinking alcohol or taking drugs. I’ve been trying to figure this out my whole life, hearing all those “piropos” growing up, even wrote a book about it :) Only wish it would have sunk in earlier that our body is beautful - curvaseous and all!  Now its up to us to make sure the message continues to spread-we are ALL beautiful, we are ALL different, and we must ALL embrace our Beautifully Different HEALTHY Bodies :)

Enjoy Day 5 today & Day 6 tomorrow with Rest Day 7 on Sunday. Remember to do mini-supersets if you are pressed for time. More and more research is showing how great & effective strenuous quick exercises are and the wonderful results it shows.

Tip of the Day: Wii :) Boy is that a good game! Seriously, if you don’t have it go invest in one. There are so many great games/workouts you can do alone or with the family. The look on your kids face when you are doing it with them…. priceless :)

Until Monday Friends….Have a Great Weekend! Be safe…cuidanse :)

PS Michael just squeezed my “pompi”- guess he just had his morning cocktail! LOL :)

Here We Go Again!

Happy Thursday Friends :) Que linda la nieve! Do you sense my sarcasm? :) I know it is beautiful and the vision from my home is amazing, but come on already, another snow day! AND tomorrow appears to be yet another :) My kids were classic this morning. When I whispered in Max’s ear that there was no school he showed his true 8yrs by quietly saying “cool” and rolling over in bed. Veronica on the other hand raised her hands and shouted “woo hoo” as if she were winning Olympic Gold! :) So we are ready…two full days of movies, games, hot coco, fun & fiesta! :)   As we all know its not all fun & games when it comes to the snow. Many have to still work and get to their destinations. The roads are slick and accidents are everywhere. As I watched Michael start with some of the shoveling this morning all sort of thoughts came through my head. Freak accidents in particular, especially after hearing the horrific news of the Sea World trainer who was killed by the whale this week. As much as we believe we are trained and ready for a task, accidents happen! Another example is C.R. Johnson. The 26 yr old Pro free skier who played in the X Games was killed yesterday after taking a blow to the head, while wearing a helmet, skiing down a steep slope. Just devastating, my heart & thoughts go out to their family. Friends, as much as we do to prepare and use precautions, we need to really watch what we are doing, listen to our head & body, and use major precautions when taking risks. Shoveling snow is one of them. Yes shoveling can kill you. A couple of weeks back I wrote on the dangerous of shoveling, and how its an exercise your body is not use to. Please go back and read it, and pass the information on to everyone you know. I remember many years back  my friends & I would go to this great bagel shop-great because it had amazing pumpernickel raisin bagels :) . One cold winter day we asked where the young man who regularly helped us was (his name escapes me) and his brother told us the horrible news-he had a massive heart attack while shoveling. This boy, I assure you, was no more than 25 yrs of age.  Please be careful out there. Take your time. Nothing is more important than your life & that of your loved one’s.  Treat shoveling like a new workout- warm up with 5 minutes of light  cardio, dress appropriately, drink plenty of water, take breaks, & most of all listen to your body!

Today’s Workout is Day 4- If you can’t get out of the house to hit the gym, no problem! My workouts can be done at home, remember :)   Or simply put on some music and have a dance off with your kids. You can teach them the hussel and they can teach you hip hop! :)

Until tomorrow friends….Please be safe! Have a Great Day- Buen Dia :)

Weigh in Wednesday!

Shame on him! :) Happy Wednesday Friends! I am not going to talk about the weather here because frankly it’s ridiculous! Another snow storm on its way! I need a major sit down with Mother Nature :) She must be going through some major PMS/Peri-menopuause/Menopause/Break up/or simply a Conan Fan who is VERY upset with the network :) AND to boot Michael put on 2lbs! Yes, today is Weigh in Wednesday and Michael went back up to 212 lbs. Now the question rises- was it a salad or that gooey burger from Wendy’s after all ?!?! I know its not easy and losing weight in the winter is hard with all the warm comfort meals out there, but the truth is you have to stay on track. Days like today when the scale doesn’t reflect the hard work you’ve been doing, you must have patience and stay with it. Losing weight and achieving a healthy lifestyle is a life-long journey that takes time.  Its important that we enjoy the process and not look back. I am here to walk this path with you and hold your hand throughout the way :)  This morning after the weigh in I observed Michael’s morning breakfast routine. Glass of water, vitamins, OJ, a banana w/a slice of wheat toast & smart balance spread, and then came the coffee. That was it! The coffee was what was holding him back. Not just the coffee, but what he was adding to it. It was more like coffee with that sugar! Michael has his coffee with skim milk and 4 TEASPOONS OF SUGAR!  AND not just one cup! So throughout the day he has  at least 12 tsp of sugar in his coffee alone.  Honey, dear, love of my life-what are you doing? :) All he needs to do is cut back on that sugar and the changes he will see will be HUGE! That is the same for so many, especially those new to diet and exercise.  You will see the inches & pounds drip off as soon as you make some changes, which could be as small as cutting the sugar in your coffee. Yes it will be hard-I get that-but remember our taste buds adapt to change beautifully, and you will get use to it I promise!  Try baby-steps like I made Michael promise to do. I let him have his first cup of the day with 2 tsp of sugar instead of 4, and then asked him to please avoid sugar in any other cups he has. Then he complained about his mid-day “Cafe”, agreed espresso without sugar is just not right.  He will then  limit himself to one cup in the morning and one espresso is the afternoon, with the goal of completely weaning himself off of the sugar all together. We are a product of proof & results, and until we don’t see it for ourselves we are not convinced. Friends, try it, you will be convinced and pleasantly surprised at how easy it is when you make some changes, and not to mention how GREAT you will feel :)

Today is Wednesday our Day off! Woo hoo :) Enjoy!

Tip of the Day: If you need that sweetness in the morning that you would find with your coffee, instead of opting for the artificial sweetener to add to your coffee, try finding it in your breakfast choice. For example, try spreading fat free/low fat cream cheese with sugar free preserves to your whole wheat/grain/or Ezekiel toast. The combination will give you the “Healthy Sugar” you are missing :)

Until tomorrow…Have a Great Day Buen Dia! :)

A Rainy Tuesday!

Hola Friends & Happy Tuesday to you :) It is raining here in the North East, actually some even got light snow. Luckily for us its all rain, but not so lucky that it appears it will be like this all week! I am dragging today and having no sunshine to grab some energy from is going to be quite the challenge! Days like today I have to work extra hard to remove all the negativity and clutter from my head, and keep focusing on what is necessary and good-all positive. Believe you me, I really feel like crawling back into bed right now & enjoy the little “me” time I have. But then reality hits and the “reminders” of what I need to get done today creep right back in :)   Shake it off Barbara and get moving! :) I ended yesterday with “Exercise being Brain Power”.  Now there is more proven fact towards the benefits of exercising, not only for the body but also for the brain. Research has shown that while engaging in exercise the blood flow that goes to the brain allows for the bad cells to be replaced by the good cells, particularly in the region of the brain that is important in memory & cognitive aging. There have been cases of individuals that work out during their lunch break and get back to work more alert and focused. Their productivity level is up, and are able to concentrate more.  I always feel my self esteem and “feeling of conquering the world” :) intensify after a good workout, and many times I get my greatest brainstorms while on a run- now I know why. There is a true scientific fact behind it :) Another fact that I found interesting was that this is the case for ALL ages- 1 to 100 :)   Exercising helped kids/teens do better in school and sports, as well as the elderly fighting early signs of dementia.  Friends, here is yet another great reason why working out is so important & good for you. Make it a family affair, grab a colleague or friend, or simply turn on your ipod, play your favorite tunes and move that beautiful body :) Get that blood flowing to the brain!

Enjoy Today’s Workout Day 2-Tomorrow is Weigh in Wednesday :)

Until tomorrow…Have a Great Day Buen Dia!

Besos y Abrazos…xoxo  “…Barbara por Atras, Barbara por Alante, y Siempre Barbara por Adentro!” :)

PS  Have to share this one: While bathing my little girl last night who’s 4 3/4 (she makes a point to remind us of that) she asks “Mom, why do we say ‘thank God’ if he takes away everyone we love like Illo (my dad short for Trujillo). Why do we thank Him for doing that? Isn’t He being selfish”  Questions like these are difficult to answer when at times its hard for us to understand. Luckily my faith is strong enough to accept the things I may not always like, and believe there is a plan.  So to my “big girl” I said, “Hay Mama, God Bless that beautiful brain of yours that is always thinking and asking questions…” Luckily for the shampoo that was getting in her face I was able to dodge that answer for another day. Divine intervention or what? :)

Happy Monday!

Hola Friends, hope you all had a great weekend! We had a fabulous time in Casa Gomez :)   The boys played ball on Saturday back at Michael’s grammar school :) and the girls had a mani pedi date!  Yesterday Max’s Bday celebration continued with a bowling party shared by his classmates. While planning the party the hostess went over the details and meal choices.  The kids had a choice of either pizza or a hot dog. At first I didn’t think anything of it -but then I said no, definitely no choices, they all get pizza. Don’t get  me wrong hot dogs are yummy and coming from a big sports fan there is nothing like a good hot dog at a ball game :) But aren’t people aware that they could be extremely harmful to kids?! Is it just me? Was I being paranoid? So I did what I always do when something boggles my mind I searched the web :)  The stats were so alarming that I thought I would share it with you all today.  Did you know that choking kills over 100 US kids 14 & under each year and THOUSANDS MORE are treated in the ER! Of the 141 choking deaths 61 were food related. Sorry hot dog but you were a big culprit along with candy & gum. There is Jersey mom who lost her child to a hot dog choking incident that is pushing to make big changes with proper labeling etc which is great. While reading her story she also shares how her boy had eaten hot dogs before and never had any problems. Friends, we need to be so careful. This can happen to anyone! Other foods that need to be monitored why eating are raw carrots, grapes, pop corn, marshmallows & even apples.  Please make sure everything is cut small. Some even suggest pea sized in younger kids.

Enjoy Today’s Workout Day 1 :)

Tip of the Day: Exersise is Brain Power! Proven to Boost you Brain :) Will get into details tomorrow..Until then Friends

Have A Great Day…Buen Dia!

I Was Wrong!

He has been good! :) Happy Friday Friends!  So as promised Michael weighed in, and can you believe I was wrong! :)   He weighed in at 210! He is averaging 2lbs a week with a total of 4lbs since we started a little over 2wks ago! Great Job M! I guess you did have a salad from Wendy’s after all :) Michael has been working alot and in his line of work he uses manual labor so in many ways he is strength training throughout the day. There isn’t room for cardio which is why I like to focus on that and often through in some extra minutes of running etc.  Carrying a busy load/schedule throughout your day is something many of us struggle with, and many times we find ourselves tired, stressed, and so busy we have no time to eat. Skipping meals is one of the worse things we can do. Michael comes home ravish many times because he hadn’t eaten since breakfast. That is awful! Not only are you messing up your metabolism, you are also setting yourself up for exhaustion, and eating everything in sight when you do finally get the chance. Planing your meals and eating them at the same time everyday has proven to be effective in fighting that feeling of always being tired. Avoid skipping meals at all costs. Prepare & plan your meals-fridge/freezer :)   Planning & being organized is the key to living a stress free, proactive, balanced life!  Feeling a little sluggish myself today after the much celebrating we did yesterday, in addition to my inability to turn off the TV struggling between the Olympics and  Premios lo Nuestro :)  along with the anticipation of all that’s ahead today & this weekend, I am going to add a few other energy enhancers that help me along my day. Yes we are multi-taskers, and at times I feel like my brain is going to explode from the feeling of being all over the place. There are days that I am so pumped that I don’t even know what the feeling of tired is, but then there are days that I crash. In order to avoid this roller coaster feeling, because the truth is I can’t afford it, what has been working for me, in addition to taking time out of my day to workout & practice Yoga, is taking a few minutes a day to give myself a “time-out” :) I have literally told my kids that I am going to “time-out” :) I lock my self in my shrine-the bathroom :) and mediate for at least 5 minutes. Close my eyes, shut everything out, and breathe. Try it, it takes alot of concentration but proven to work. Start by siting & feeling the energy of your blood running through your veins. Your feet should be firm on the floor so that you can also feel the earths energy rise through you. That feeling of connection with the Universe is incredible & wonderful!  Stretch your body, rise your arms over your head-practice one of the Yoga poses we’ve implemented in our routine. Instantly you will feel energized and re-charged.  Another practice I often find myself doing to bring myself peace and focus, is simply going outside no matter how cold it is, breathing that fresh crisp air and looking out into the sun/sky. Connecting yourself with the trees & nature. Bringing awareness to the sound of the birds chirping, or leaves fluttering, even the sound of cars driving by. Anything that can connect you and remove you from the clutter in your brain. Removing that clutter, will alleviate your stress level, by freeing you up and bringing focus back to your life, and ultimately giving you the energy you need to tackle all it is you are set out to do :)

Today’s Workout is Day 5  As always I have no plans of blogging this weekend so continue tomorrow with Day 6 and rest on Day 7

Tip of the Day: Lentils- the ultimate belly flatner! :)

Have a Great Weekend!

Happy Birthday Max!

Happy Thursday Friends! I have so much to talk about and so little time! Today is a very busy, yet very special day for me :) My Beautiful Boy, Maximo Miguel Felipe Gomez :) was born 8 yrs ago today! One of the happiest days of my life. The joy & pride I feel no words can describe! Don’t get me wrong, he can be a royal pain in the ass at times  & parenting sure is hard but for today let me soak up the love :)  Seriously, much of who I am today is because of my kids. It was after the birth of my daughter that I decided to write my book. My obsession with “looking” a certain way was taking away precious time with my children, and I knew it was wrong. I decided then to let go of the madness and aim at living a full balanced life. It was also then that I discovered Yoga, a blessing, and started putting my feelings down on paper. I knew I wasn’t the  only one out there feeling that way, & pledged to do all I can to educate & motivate. I guess at the end of the day we all stride to be positive roll models, especially for our kids. Our children have the ability of learning our good habits as well as our bad. Although I am failing in the patience department (lack there of) :) I am proud to know that they are following in my footsteps on Wellness. They are aware of their eating choices, and enjoy a good “Workout with mom” :) Yes, I do let them eat “un-healthy treats” but know that “a treat” is what it is, not the norm. Friends, its a full circle. The health of our children, especially with today’s focus on childhood obesity,  is a family affair, and much of the education has to start with the parents. In many ways we can learn from our kids, & our kids can learn from us-diet & exercise is one.  On that note, thank goodness they have me! :) Can you believe he ran out on the scale again!  He is avoiding it BIG TIME :) and do you know why!?!?  While looking over my bank statement guess what I saw….WENDY’s! :) He went to Wendy’s, & used the ATM!  What am I  going to do with this man?  I know it already, he is going to say he had a cup of chili (which is ok) but I know the truth, he had one of those gooey mushroom swiss huge things :) Que rico! :) Ok focus…It is my mission today to get him on the scale if its the last thing I do! Stay tuned :)

Before I go I want to clarify on yesterdays blog with reference to the freezer. Please make sure that what you use for storage is a product that does specify it can be used in the freezer. If not stored properly, not only will it get “freezer burn” it could also be toxic and not safe. One item that was questioned was aluminum foil. “Heavy Duty Aluminum Foil” is OK, NOT “Household Foil”. There is a difference. I’ve listed some items that are good, but remember always check packages and when in doubt be sure to ask a store clerk before purchasing.

  • “Freezer Bags”
  • “Freezer Paper”  Much stronger than regular paper, with a protective lining on one side-great for meats.
  • “Plastic Freezer Containers” My fav great for stacking and storage
  • “Aluminum Foil Dishes” Great for storing pre-cooked meals such as Lasagna & Pie :)
  • “Heavy Duty Aluminum Foil”   Do not wrap acidic fruits in foil though-acid reacts with the metal and can change the taste & appearance of the fruit

Enjoy Workout Day 4 today!  Remember you can mix it up. For example, I am taking today off instead of yesterday. Just make sure you do not work on the same muscle group. It is very important that you give the area you worked on a break. You can really hurt yourself if you do not. Always listen to your body :)

Until tomorrow friends…I am off to surprise Max at school as “Mystery Reader” along with BDay “treats” – it is a VERY SPECIAL DAY that I am afraid ( “treats”) will last throughout the weekend.  What is it with us? Give us an excuse and we will stretch out the party for as long as we can! :)

Have a Great Day…Buen Dia!

Weigh in Wednesday!

Happy Wednesday Friends! Michael ran out of the house claiming he had to get to a crane to do a job! I don’t know about that, something tells me he wants to avoid “Weigh in Wednesday” :) Between the snowed in days and Fat Tuesday I am afraid of what the scale is going to reveal. There is so much I can do. I can prepare good meals, and keep only healthy ones at home. I can motivate & train. Remind him of all the great benefits that go along with keeping a healthy lifestyle, in addition to pointing out how great he feels when he does. But the truth is I am not with him 24/7 and he has to put his own part in as well. Yes there are days that he chooses those healthier lunches, but then there are days that he does not. That is an excuse I hear over and over not only from Michael but from all my clients. I don’t want to hear it! There is no reason why you need to grab a bite from a fast food restaurant EVERYDAY! Besides it can get quite costly.  I would like to take this time to introduce you to someone…..Friends meet Freezer :)   If you were to take a look at my freezer you would find all the essential food and ingredients I need to whip up a healthy meal at any given time. We are ALL busy- that is a fact. So I will show you how you can keep from “grabbing lunch” to “packing lunch”.  OK , there are the easy alternative that you keep in the pantry and fridge: salads & sandwiches. We all may not eat a sandwich everyday so therefore the bread (whole grain) spoils. Keep it in the fridge-it will keep fresh longer. To warm up either bring it to room temp or toast it. All you need to do is add your favorites, such as turkey, low sodium ham, tuna or salmon salad etc.  Salads and fresh vegetables also spoil if not eaten within a weeks time. If you seal it in an air tight freezer bag you can store it in the freezer for up to at least 6 mos. Place the salad or veggies in the fridge to thaw.  I usually prefer to steam my vegetables, and/or cook with them, so they will go right from freezer to stove. Remember though, already frozen fruits & vegetables bought straight from the market are loaded with vitamins and just as good for you.  One thing I love to do for either my protein shakes or my kids smoothies is add a frozen banana to it. When I buy them fresh and they are turning brown because no one is eating them, I peel them and wrap individually in aluminum foil & store in the freezer.  When I am ready to make a shake I grab & throw one in a blender and done. Yummy :) add some frozen or fresh berries, nonfat yogurt or whey protein.  Another way to keep healthy snacks on hand to grab and go, is by storeing your almonds & walnuts in freezer bags in the freezer. If you are not a regular nut lover like me :) and don’t eat them often they can lose some of their benefits such as the unsaturated oils in them after a few weeks. Keeping them in the freezer will keep them fresh for up to 6 mos. When it comes to cooking a meal, you can always cook more than you need and store the rest in the freezer. Always remember to use airtight containers and freezer bags. I do this all the time with soups. Who wants to cook a nice healthy soup when they are sick? Especially in the winter months I find myself cooking all different types of healthy soups (no cream) and storing them in individual containers in the freezer. Whenever I want one I place them in the fridge for a cool down and heat them in a pot as usual.  Finally my fish. I always have fish in my freezer. I LOVE SALMON and cook it any which way imagineable. The wonders it does for us are amazing- they don’t call it natures botox for nothing :) I get mine frozen by the bags. My local market has them but I know that the BJ’s and Costco’s of the world also carry them. They are individually packed and luckily much more cost efficient.  The best thing is that they defrost within a couple of hours and cook in minutes- a very quick and extremely healthy meal.  There are so many ways to stay on the healthy eating track, all you need to do is to get out of your comfort zone, and really want to do it. So get moving :)

Today is your day off!   If you are following our schedule take your much deserved day off. If you are not continue of your own schedule- Superset mini workouts or simply 30 minutes of cardio. If 10 minutes is all you have, fine. Just do something! Don’t let temptation take over the BEST OF YOU!! :) You’ve got the power! A HEALTHIER you is waiting to emerge! Friends our body is the greatest gift we have received…treat it with love & respect, just as you did your favorite Barbie Doll or GI Joe :)

Until Tomorrow….Have a Great Day Buen Dia!!

Fat Tuesday!

Happy Mardi Gras Friends! Yes it is Fat Tuesday, and the beginning of the Lenten season for us Christians. I remember years where I would truly take this day to heart. One year or two :) I ate so much chocolate I made my self sick. The sugar rush lasted for days!  Another year I ate so many bagels I had such a huge carb headache I felt my brain was going to explode. Of course this was all B.J. -Before Journey :)   For me, today, I like to take this time to take a good look inside myself and ask where it is I can better. There may still be some “resolutions” stored within us, and even if you are not a Christian this is a good time to reflect on those and make some positive changes.  Let’s try it :) Take the next 40 days- a symbolic number with meaning. The Jews spent “40 years” in the desert on their way to the Promise Land, and Jesus spent “40 days and 40 nights” fasting in the desert before beginning his ministry.  So if we use the next 40 days to  remove 1 or 2  specific foods from our diet we can make a huge impact on our weight loss. Take a look at your daily diet. Many may be loading up with empty calories such as bagels & rice cakes, not to mention candy! These foods do nothing for you but load you up with sugar which turns into fat. Or you can be like me who thinks that I am eating healthy when I am actually overloading on the cheese, nuts, & wine. Yes these are good for you, but remember too much of something good is not always good. “Todo lo exagerado es malo” :)  Friends, you can save yourself so many extra calories by giving up just ONE!  Come on…give it a try. I assure you that by the end of the 40 days you will see such a significant difference in your body that you may not even want to start eating that food again :) Just make sure you don’t substitute that one thing with something equally as bad….been there done that :)

Enjoy your Workout Day 2 today!

Food for thought :) A Mojito has just about the same amount of calories as a bag of Penut M&M’s.  Just imagine the great benefits of giving up both!   OK at least one! :)

Until tomorrow friends! Weigh in Wednesday! I’m scared of this one…Michael plans on enjoying his Fat Tuesday! :)

Have a Great Day..Buen Dia!

Determination!

Happy Monday friends! Hope you all had a happy & healthy weekend, sharing the love of Valentines Day that should continue throughout everyday :) Many are off today from either work or school due to Presidents Day.  I was blessed with the birth of my first born a day like today 8yrs ago! It was February 18 back then so his actual birthday isn’t for a few days still-but of course the Trujillo in me has been re-living and celebrating since yesterday! :) Aside from the many great things my boy is, one thing is for sure he is a true athlete and has loved all sports since the day he opened his eyes :)   That sparkle was very clear as we watched the Opening Ceremony of the 2010 Winter Olympics! The excitement and awe of it all was electrifying to watch. I felt his little brain struggle with the thought of which sport he was going to train for so that one day he will win Olympic Gold!  This weekend all talks of being in the major leagues was overshadowed by Apalo Ohno and Sean White :)   These athletes…amazing! Triumph, determination, life-long commitment, sacrifices, they may fall, but they sure get right back up. There is so much we can learn from athletes that is relevant to our everyday lives. Just sit and take a real hard look at them. Their diets, training schedule, mind focus, family support. With every fiber of there being they will remove the negative and only implement the positive. There are no words of negativity. No one is going to tell them they are not going to win! That thought is not allowed in. My friends I firmly believe that this is the way we need to live our lives. Remove ourselves from our comfort zones, don’t let any negativity take over what it is you truly want to do. If you don’t feel like working out today don’t allow that to even be a thought. Get moving, eat healthy, and implement that Healthy Lifestyle as a way of life just as brushing your teethe is. :)

Have fun with Workout Day 1today! In about two weeks we’ll change things up a little so that we avoid reaching a plateau & we can shock the system a little.

Tip of the Day: Gum :) Yes chewing sugar free mint gum will not only help with cavities, but will also help you with cravings and hunger. After your meal either brush your teeth or chew on a piece of gum.  Removing the taste of food from your mouth will help in satisfying your hunger, and avoids that second helping or attacking that chocolate cake!  If the ugly hunger monster creeps in between meals, go for the gum :)

Until tomorrow…Have a Great Day Buen Dia! :)
